Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure used to treat infected or damaged dental pulp inside the tooth. The dental pulp is the innermost part of the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the dental pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, a cracked tooth, or trauma, it can cause severe pain and lead to abscess formation if left untreated. During a root canal treatment, the dentist will remove the infected pulp, clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, and then seal it with a filling or crown to prevent further infection.
